GUIDE: How to use your rollator correctly

GUIDE: Sådan går du korrekt med din rollator - Seniorpleje

Ditte Alici |

In this article, as a nurse, I will give you my best advice on how to best and most safely use your rollator.

There is a sea of different types and models of rollators on the Danish market.

Most of them are excellent, but a large number of them are not adjusted correctly for the individual user. Worst of all is when it is completely the wrong size in height, or if it is too heavy and clumsy.

To be able to walk stably and safely, it is important that you have your rollator thoroughly checked and ensure that it is the optimal rollator for you.

You need to feel which type of rollator reflects you as a person. Are you mostly an indoor person, are you a city person, or do you spend most of your time outdoors? We have many different types of indoor and outdoor rollators, all equipped with the best safety features.

Adjusting the rollator

First, let's take a look at you and the seat height of the rollator (see image of seat height below). When both the seat height and the handles fit and are adjusted in height specifically for you, a rollator can be a huge gift in everyday life. It gives you the necessary support, balance, and can provide you with necessary short breaks.

If your rollator does not fit you and your height, it will be very difficult to maintain the correct balance and posture. In this article, I want to look at how we stand and walk optimally with our rollator - specifically focusing on our posture.

You should pay attention to the following points (see image for inspiration):

  1. You should stand upright with a straight back and relaxed shoulders.
  2. It is important that both your arms, wrists, and hands are relaxed.
  3. You should have a slight bend of approx. 30 degrees at your elbow joint. If you bend too much, you often lose your balance. If your arms are too straight, you often pull your shoulders up, and all shocks/impacts from the ground go directly into your shoulders and neck. If you look at the picture below, you will see that his left arm is too straight, while his right arm has a perfect bend.
  4. Remember to look up and forward. Looking forward helps with balance and sense of direction. Many tend to fall forward when looking down.
  5. Straighten up and push your chest forward, and your shoulders back.
  6. Take calm, measured steps. Find your own rhythm.
  7. Use the "pedals" mounted on both sides by the rear wheels. They are designed to tip your rollator over curbs etc., so you don't lose your balance by lifting with your arms.

These 7 tips for good posture are general tips. Some people, due to ailments, are unable to use these tips. This can, for example, be people with Parkinson's, Scoliosis, spinal compression, etc.

Therefore, it is important to remember that balance and the feeling of safety always come before general optimal settings. As a nurse, I can guide, advise, and adjust your rollator so that it specifically suits you and your challenges.
