I stumble over my door thresholds. What can I do about my old-fashioned door thresholds?
Many older houses and apartments have traditional door frames and thresholds. This is not something we usually think much about, but it can create significant challenges for people who have problems with either balance, motor skills, or visual impairment. Therefore, it is one of the most important things to start focusing on – even if you may not be a rollator or wheelchair user.
Why are door ramps a good idea?
Many accidents happen in the home due to tripping, and doorsteps and doorframes often play a big role. We don't always look properly, and when you have a doorframe that extends above the normal floor level, it doesn't take much for you to risk tripping or bumping into the door edges. This is also a well-known phenomenon for both wheelchair users and rollator users.
What should I choose?
We have a large selection of fixed door ramps, access ramps, and rubber ramps, so you can move safely and securely around your home. What suits your home is very individual. If you have a family member, friend, or a good neighbor who is handy, we will almost always recommend our fixed door ramps.
What is the difference between rubber ramps and door ramps?
Door ramps are fixed ramps in either metal-colored aluminum or darker aluminum. They are mounted with screws in your floor and used instead of a regular doorframe. With this solution, you first remove the old doorstep. This is a very safe, permanent, and super elegant solution.
Rubber ramps do not require any tools or intervention with your existing doorframe. You simply measure the width of your doorframe and the height of the doorstep/stair step itself. We have rubber ramps in many different widths and heights, and it is possible to cut the widths to size if your doorframe has slightly different dimensions. We have both rubber ramps with and without adhesive.
Should I choose rubber ramps with or without adhesive?
If you have carpets or delicate wooden floors, it is NOT recommended to use rubber ramps with adhesive foil, as they can leave marks upon removal. However, they can be advantageously used on smooth surfaces such as linoleum, tiles, and ordinary wooden floors. You can purchase adhesive remover from us. Rubber ramps without adhesive, on the other hand, can be easily moved around if you do not have fixed free access to all rooms.
What is the difference between channels and wheelchair ramps?
Channels are long, narrow rails with edges on both sides. They can often be folded out and taken on the go. However, they are used exclusively for manual wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs. Wheelchair ramps are a smooth surface and can be obtained in many different types of material. Many of the ones we sell are lightweight models that are both portable and foldable.
What kind of ramp should I choose?
In most cases, we would recommend a good aluminum wheelchair ramp. It is both easy to assemble/disassemble, it doesn't weigh much, and it can be folded. It is very appropriate to choose this type, as it may be necessary to take it with you on the go, or to bring it in for the night in big cities, or if you use it for your shop. In addition, you can choose different types of surfaces, some of which will have an extra anti-slip surface. These ramps can be used by both rollator users, wheelchair users, and others with walking difficulties or a cane.
How do I find the right height to fit the main door?
This depends on several factors. It is very individual how steep a slope can be. If it is too steep to get up, you will need too much effort. For a normal height doorstep, most people will choose a ramp with a length of 120cm, if not limited by space (e.g., pavement). If you don't have much space, a 90 cm ramp can be a solution. Shorter ramps are often used for smaller doorsteps, as well as for taking on holiday or in the city.
