When I, as a nurse, ask about incontinence, it is an embarrassing topic for many, and still incredibly taboo.
Why? It's hard to give a specific answer as to why, as incontinence can be many different things and be caused by just as many different things.
The commonalities, however, are that it greatly impacts daily life for the individual, and that it is unfortunately still associated with guilt and shame. Incontinence includes involuntary urination at night during sleep, as well as a weak/small bladder/reduced pelvic floor muscle function that causes urine to leak spontaneously.
Classic causes of adult incontinence can be neurological issues, trauma, postpartum, radiation therapy, and after surgery.
Some people retrain their pelvic floor, bladder, and muscle function, some are approved for catheter treatment, and others receive an allowance for diapers.
