Palliation - how do we best contribute to a dignified and pain-free farewell to life?

Palliation - hvordan hjælper vi bedst til en værdig og smertefri afsked med livet? - Seniorpleje

Ditte Alici |

For many, the concept of PALLIATION is a huge taboo. A topic where many strong emotions are involved, and which many of us do not want to talk about.

-It's hard to put into words because it's often difficult to talk about death, and to accept that at this stage of life, no cure or treatment can be offered.

When talking about palliation, there is no prospect of recovery, but rather a changed focus: life-prolonging treatment, quality of life, care & pain relief.

As a nurse, I have been in many situations where I meet vulnerable people who have received the harsh news that they are either terminal or will be assigned to a palliative team.

It is difficult for both the patient and their loved ones. Therefore, it is important that families secure themselves as best as possible, and ensure that there is a "safety net," both in the form of family and friends, as well as close contact with the palliative team in your area. It will often be your own general practitioner or your regular doctor at the hospital who initiates the process.

It is important that the best possible conditions are quickly ensured, no matter how far along you are in the process, so that the whole family receives the help and care they need throughout the process.

This can, for example, include:

  • Regular home visits by a home care nurse
  • Regular home visits by a palliative care nurse
  • Regular check-up visits with a palliative doctor
  • Securing relevant aids
  • Purchase of pain-relieving aids (ensuring sleep, rest & prevention of pressure sores)
  • The "Comfort Box," which can be obtained when a Terminal Declaration has been prescribed by your own doctor/hospital.

A terminal declaration is typically issued when doctors estimate that a patient will die within approximately three to six months.

As a nurse, I have experience with palliation from both hospitals, shielded dementia wards, and home care. I now use all these many experiences when I meet all you lovely people through SENIORPLEJE.

Seniorpleje has a large selection of products that are carefully selected for vulnerable people, including terminal patients and people associated with Palliative Teams and Hospice. We operate under confidentiality, and you can always feel safe and secure when you contact us.
