Sleeping poorly? - 5 good tips for side sleepers 😴🥱

Sover du dårligt? - 5 Gode råd til dig, der sover på siden 😴🥱 - Seniorpleje

Ditte Alici |

Good sleep habits and sleep quality are topics that concern many people.

And for good reason. First and foremost, there's been a much greater focus on it, as it's scientifically proven that poor sleep quality affects both your health and your quality of life.

-So what can negatively affect our sleep?

There can be many reasons for this. Some may be due to medication, stress, worries, or bad habits.

Most of these tips can be used by everyone, as they are general sleep advice. However, tip 5 is specifically aimed at those who sleep best on their side, as this position can present challenges and pain issues if you don't have the right accessories.

TIP 1)

If you notice that your mood and general well-being have changed over time, I recommend discussing this with your general practitioner. He will, among other things, ask about how long you've felt this way, how your night's sleep is, if you've felt stressed, have pain, or if you worry a lot. A blood test might be done.

Sometimes it's very helpful to have a professional assess your health so you can get the optimal help and support.

TIP 2)

Make sure to carefully review the habits you've adopted during the afternoon and evening.

It could be that you're not having regular meals, causing your blood sugar to fluctuate uncontrollably. Fluctuating blood sugar can affect more than just hunger pangs, energy levels, and dizziness... It also affects your mood and hormones.

Avoid too much sugar and caffeinated drinks 2-3 hours before you go to sleep.

TIP 3)

Ventilate your room well before bedtime, and turn off your computer and TV 1/2-1 hour before you go to sleep. Listen to some music or read a good book. Your brain's activity level needs to calm down a bit, otherwise, it could lead to a more restless sleep.

 TIP 4)

Avoid sports activities that increase your heart rate right before you go to sleep. Feel free to do physically demanding sports 2-3 hours before you go to bed.

When you exercise, both your heart rate and circulation are activated, and your body produces both endorphins and a lot of sweat. Even though it feels wonderful and relaxing immediately after exercise, it takes your body a couple of hours to "calm down."

So air out the bedroom while you take a nice warm shower.

TIP 5)

Many people believe they have the optimal pillow, mattress, or duvet. However, the fact is that most mattresses are designed for people who sleep on their backs.

Your resting body position is anatomically very different depending on whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.

When you, in this case, lie on your side, your entire neck, spine, and pelvis will be bent, so it doesn't always get the right support during sleep. We often become sore and overstrained around the neck, shoulder, hip, and lower back.

This is where, as a nurse, I can guide and advise you on which specific pillows, knee pillows, weighted blankets, support pillows, and mattresses could help you.

You can see our large selection of weighted blankets, as well as pressure-relieving mattresses and pillows here:

As humans, we are all uniquely put together, and we all have our own challenges, whether they are pain issues, anxiety, mental unrest, or restless legs.
-Therefore, we recommend that you call and have a chat with me about changing any bad habits and choosing optimal sleep aids.

I am a trained nurse, have many years of experience, and am accustomed to working under professional secrecy. In other words, you can feel safe and secure when you contact us.
